Special mention to Dave Danne who took a tactical spew after the first pint -  however we were proud to see that he walked right out of the bathrooms and up to the bar to purchase another beer! Dishonerable mentions go to Sarah’s friend who was too cool to play golf, and to Dave Hallamore who disappeared into the night after the first pub – the girls didn’t know WHAT to do without Dave’s lovely locks to lust after.

All in all it was a sordid affair, there were some laughs, some tears, and in the end i think everyone was too drunk to work out if there was a winner or not. Looks like we’re all winners. How trite is that?

In order to enter the correct number of teams in the correct leagues we need to get commitments from those who wish to play. Therefore if you could please read over the below information and send the club back an email regarding the team you would like to play for that would help us determine the correct number of teams and in what league to enter.

• Season Commences: Tuesday 3rd of August
• Number of Rounds: 15
• Match days as follows:
  • Tuesday – WSL1, WSL2 & WSL3
  • Wednesday – MSL1, MSL2 & MSL4
  • Thursday – MSL2, MSL3 & MSL5
• Finals: Major – Minor Semis, Prelims then Grand Finals on Saturday the 11th of December
• VWPI 2010-2011 Player Registration: $164.00 (registration for two VWPI Seasons)
• Approximate Season Training & Game Fees: $200.00

Please keep in mind the length of the season (15 rounds) and the VWPI Player registration fee which covers the up & coming 2010 Summer Competition, as well as the 2011 Winter Competition. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact a committee member.

Trials will be run during the regular Monday night training session at the South Yarra Sports Centre on *31 May 2010* – TONIGHT!!!

GIRLS: from 7:30pm

MEN: from 8:30pm

At the trials, we will be selecting a total of 8 players for each of the Men’s and Women’s teams. If you happen to miss out on the initial selection, we will be selecting a further 4 – 5 players for each team by the end of the Victorian Water Polo Winter Season (finals during the week ending 25 June 2010). The trials will consist of a mixture of skills, shooting and a full-court trial match. A selection committe will be established shortly in order to select the best team to represent the club and Melbourne University in Perth later in the year.

We understand that, for some of you, committing to the team this early might prove difficult. We do, however, urge you to come down to the trials regardless. We can always work out any logistical issues at a later date should they arise.

Welcome to the first installment of the Melbourne University Water Polo Clubs 2010 VicPolo Winter Competition Newsletter.

This is a new initiative the Club is implementing to keep everyone informed on how our playing members are going in the current VicPolo Competition.

Round 1 Results
This week was the first round of the 2010 Victorian Water Polo Inc Winter Competition and the Club had a total of six teams representing Melbourne University. The MUPolo teams who played had a mixed bag of results with two wins and four losses, with all games being highly competitive.

As with the start of any newly created teams, there is an inevitable “teething” period where players learn to play together and team camaraderie is built. This we are sure will be quickly achieved. MUPolo, like you, are hoping this translates to team success and more importantly making water polo fun for all our players.

  • MUPolo will recommence training on Monday the 1st of March, 2010
  • Skills training will be held at South Yarra Sports Centre (679 Chapel St, South Yarra) every Monday evening from 7:30pm through to 9:45pm (Men’s & Women’s training times differ)
  • Fitness training will be held at the Melbourne University Pool (Beaurepaire Centre) every Tuesday & Wednesday evening from 6pm through to 8:30pm

Symptom: Drinking fails to give satisfaction and taste; beer unusually pale and clear. 
Fault: Glass empty. 
Remedy: Find someone to buy you another pint.

Symptom: Feet cold and wet. 
Fault: Glass being held at incorrect angle. 
Remedy: Turn glass the other way so that the open end is pointing at the ceiling.

Symptom: Feet warm and wet. 
Fault: Loss of self control. 
Remedy: Go stand next to the nearest dog – after a while complain to its owner about its lack of house training and demand a pint in compensation.

Symptom: Bar moving 
Fault: You are being carried out. 
Remedy: Find if you are being taken to another pub – if not, complain loudly that you are being hijacked.

Symptom: Bar swaying. 
Fault: Air turbulence unusually high, maybe due to a darts match in progress. 
Remedy: Insert broom handle down back of jacket.

Symptom: You wake up to find your bed hard, cold and wet. You can not see your bedroom walls or ceiling. 
Fault: You have spent the night in a gutter. 
Remedy: Check your watch to see if it is opening time – if not, treat yourself to a lie in.

Symptom: You notice the wall opposite is covered with ceiling tiles and has a fluorescent light strip across it. 
Fault: You have fallen over backwards. 
Remedy: If glass is still full and no one is standing on your drinking arm, stay put – if not, get someone to help you up and lash yourself to the bar.

Symptom: Everything has gone dark. 
Fault: The pub is closing. 
Remedy: Panic!

This is when you suddenly become an expert on every single subject in the known universe. You know you know everything and want to pass on your knowledge to anyone who will listen. At this stage you are always RIGHT and, of course, the person you are talking to is very WRONG. This makes for an interesting argument when both parties are SMART.

Stage 2 – GOOD LOOKING

This is when you realise that you are the BEST LOOKING person in the entire bar and that every attractive female fancies you. You can go up to a perfect stranger KNOWING that they fancy you and really want to talk to you. Bear in mind that you are still SMART, so you can talk to this person about any subject under the sun.

Stage 3 – RICH

This is when you suddenly become the richest person in the world. You can buy drinks for the entire bar because you have an armoured truck full of money parked behind the bar. You can also make bets at this stage, because you are still SMART, so naturally you win all your bets. It doesn’t matter how much you bet because you are RICH. You will also buy drinks for everyone that you fancy, because you are also the BEST LOOKING person in the world.

Stage 4 – BULLETPROOF

You are now ready to pick fights with anyone and everyone, especially those with whom you have been betting or arguing with. This is because nothing can hurt you. At this point you can also go up to the partners of people you fancy and challenge them to a battle of wits or money. You have no fear of loosing the battle becuase you are SMART, RICH and you are BETTER LOOKING than they are anyway!

Stage 5 – INVISIBLE

This is the final stage of drunkenness. At this point you can do anything because NO ONE CAN SEE YOU . You dance on the table to impress the people you fancy because the rest of the people in the room can not see you. You are also invisible to the people who want to fight you. You can walk through the street singing at the top of your lungs because no one can see or hear you. Also, because you are still SMART you know all of the words.

There was high debauchery, there was tales of old regaled at high-speed, there were tears and plenty of jokes were made with a blatant disregard for all things race or sex related. New friends allied with old and many bonds were formed. Some players spoke of dark times when assaults had been committed or personal liberties impinged but all in all it was a special time.

There was a serious side to the proceedings though and this was the club elections. After some heated voting, a stabbing and many applicants vying for all positions, an agreement was made and positions were established.

Presidency was achieved by the mighty Ben Yeo who will rule us all with his iron fist. Two vice-presidents were created being the pretty eyed Adele Maloney and the cowardly Brett Liang. Secretary is Dominik White, who is like a flower, treasurer is this guy called Jules Malseed-Harris, and Lara Thompson and Tim Dow have joined forces to become Social Sectaries. Some have voiced concern for the safety of Lara Thompson but we think she will be just fine. Darren Waters is king of the website and another lovely man called Joel Smith is doing the marketing and sponsorship stuff.

Most importantly we give thanks to Nikki Brandt and Brett Liang for their roles as our coaches, women’s and men’s teams respectively. There are also many people involved with the Social side of things and they are great, good on them.

We all look forward to a long and prosperous year at Melbourne University Water Polo Club. Good luck team
