Australian University Games – Selection

As you may be aware, the 2010 Australian University Games will be held in Perth from *27 September to 1 October* this year. Following eager requests from our members, we have decided to bring forward the trials in order to give selected players the opportunity to purchase cheaper flights as early as possible.

Trials will be run during the regular Monday night training session at the South Yarra Sports Centre on *31 May 2010* – TONIGHT!!!

GIRLS: from 7:30pm

MEN: from 8:30pm

At the trials, we will be selecting a total of 8 players for each of the Men’s and Women’s teams. If you happen to miss out on the initial selection, we will be selecting a further 4 – 5 players for each team by the end of the Victorian Water Polo Winter Season (finals during the week ending 25 June 2010). The trials will consist of a mixture of skills, shooting and a full-court trial match. A selection committe will be established shortly in order to select the best team to represent the club and Melbourne University in Perth later in the year.

We understand that, for some of you, committing to the team this early might prove difficult. We do, however, urge you to come down to the trials regardless. We can always work out any logistical issues at a later date should they arise.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either me on 0422 678 604, or Brett Laing on 0424 583 422. Also, if you know any players from other teams that are Melbourne University students, please forward this email onto them.

We look forward to seeing you all at the trials.

Australian University Games: Adelaide 2006

Yet another Uni Games has come with MUPolo representing Melbourne Uni with a fine team of players.

The first day of competition saw the Men’s team play two matches, the first against our fellow Victorians, Monash University, in which were convincingly victorious, beating them 15 – 2. The Men’s second game, against University of Technology Sydney showed how strong the men’s team were with yet another strong win, 22 – 2.

On the second day of the men’s competition MUPolo played Queensland University of Technology in their first match with yet another great win, the final score being 17 – 5. Our forth match for the tournament proved to be a little tougher against RMIT, the final score being 6-4, MUPolo victorious of course. (more…)

Southern University Games 2005

Another year rolled around and another year of MUPolo Women’s dominance of Victorian University Water Polo. The team selected for AUG Brisbane this year got together for their first real hit-out and to ensure qualification of that tournament. Qualification was never in question however as only three teams entered and all were ensured automatic entry for Brisbane. What was on the line however was pride, and we quickly established that in the first game against Deakin.

Deakin had a couple of tricky players that the girls had to manage, but our superior speed and overall skill easily accounted for them. The final score ended up 21-3, with A. Maloney A. Gronow good contributors with a number of goals each. K. Woolley and K. Roberts were also solid and N. Brandt had an easy job in goals. Acting captain N. Brandt said after the game, “It was great fun… I always like giving Deakin a good spanking!” (more…)

Australian University Games: Brisbane 2005

Buy me a beer and introduce yourself

This years AUG was an interesting and yet intense affair, filled with love, lust, passion, drama, tears, sex, no sex, violence, hatred and crime. Yet there is one thing that remains an overall theme, is an adjective and a noun (and for some a verb and for the clever, an adverb) of course I’m talking about BUNK.

The games were held in Brisbane, or “Brisvegas” for those in the bizz, and the weather was hot, the sun was out and people were all Goths. We knew we were in for an interesting adventure when we arrived at the venue of our accommodation. It was an impressive and complex structure; a backpackers youth hostel known as Bunk, a place of wonder and yet filled with hate. It did however have one glorious attribute and this, my friends, was $7 jugs. Oh how thee great lord be praised.

After many nights of drinking and fun, which included toga parties, bands at the showgrounds, gamblor, a high police presence and sneezing, some quite skilful water polo was played. The girls team had a good result, winning a number of games and finishing up 6th, the coach, Greg Thompson being quite happy with this result and saying “I haved no legs, that’s right ‘haved’ “. Southern University Games 2004

SUC Water polo was held on the weekend of 31 July – 1 August at Monash University Clayton. This competition was held to organise rankings for AUS South region in the upcoming Australian University Games Perth 2004 competition, and MUPolo continued its form from last years AUC Gold Coast tournament. The Men’s team played exceptionally well against the much fancied RMIT and came away with a well fought draw 8-8, in the game of the tournament. The Women’s team followed up trouncing RMIT 11 – 1 with K Roberts leading the charge scoring 5 goals, and N. Brandt unstoppable in goals. Coach G. Thompson was delighted with the win, stating “It was an excellent opener for our campaign, considering a large number of these girls hadn’t played together before.”

The second and third matches for MUPolo were more convincing for the Men’s team, beating La Trobe 21-3 and Monash 10-2. Excellent performances by S. McCombe, C. Gronow, and N. Wawryk, with special mention to B. Chan for dominating in goals once again. The Women’s team had another relatively easy match against La Trobe, winning 11-1, with goals coming from C O’Donnell, B. Davidson and M. Zebrowski. However, the following match against Monash was a much tighter affair, and the team ended up drawing 6-6 in a tightly fought contest. K. Woolley was a standout with two early goals, and L. Wall having an excellent defensive game. However, the team began to tire in the last half and only managed to hold on for the draw against an underrated Monash. (more…)

Australian University Games: Gold Coast 2003

We don’t just raise the bar, we drink you under it!

Late in 2003, the twenty-six team members made a journey up to the sunny Gold Coast for a week of fun in the sun and a little bit of polo. The week kicked off with a night out on the town soaking in the many schoolie boys and girls, hitting the Rose & Crown hard until the wee hours, and finally ending the evening with a late night kebab from legendary Theo’s and a nice 1k stroll home. While the competition didn’t start until Monday, MU Polo set the standard for other universities on the Sunday night when all freshers were punished with compulsory “No Underwear” for the entire evening. Let’s just say nobody would argue with the logo “F$%K Football” ever again. Matches were competed at a fierce level, with the men’s team excelling in a ‘weak’ pool, and making it to the semi finals without dropping a match. The women’s team had a much more difficult assignment, and struggled to grasp the finer complexities of the game against some well drilled opposition. (more…)
