This year the MUPolo Pub Golf Tournament will be held on Friday the 25th of May with the round officially teeing off at 7:30pm at the Queensberry Hotel and kicking well onto the evening. So dig out your golfing attire and warm up your drinking arm for what is sure to be a great night!

And so you are fully prepared to the evening make sure you have a read over the Rules:

1. Each player must choose & consume ONE drink in each pub/club/hotel. Points are only scored for this ONE drink (except where penalties apply).
2. The winner shall be the player with the LEAST NUMBER OF POINTS at the end of the ninth hole.
3. Drinking is considered finishing a drink in one, two, or three, etc. swallows. A drink involves placing the glass to your mouth, tipping, & swallowing. You may not place the glass to your mouth & stop the tipping or swallowing motion – that’s cheating. See penalties below.
4. A referee is appointed for each game. The referee is timekeeper, judge, & the final decision-maker in all disputes. The referees’ decision is final.
5. Competitors are allowed 30 minutes to complete each hole. Failure to complete your drink in this time is covered in the penalties below. Should time be running out the referee may further limit the time allowed at each hole.
6. Each player is responsible for maintaining their own scorecard. At the start of the match competitors are allocated partners with whom they will play the round. It is each player’s responsibility to ensure their partner’s score is correctly kept. In addition, at each hole players must declare their score to the referee who is responsible for maintaining the leader board. Fudging yours or your partner’s scorecards is cheating – penalties will be strictly enforced.
7. All points are scored based on full strength (4.5 – 5.5 %) & full sized 550ml beers/ciders.

It is that time of the year again where the Melbourne University Water Polo Club needs all its members to come along, get involved and elect a new committee for 2012 – that’s right; it’s time for the 2012 MUPolo AGM.  And whilst many may think that AGM’s are boring events that are not worth going to, here at MUPolo we pride ourselves on getting the formality of the evening over an done with as quickly as possible (club record being 14 minutes) so as all our members can enjoy the social side of the evening over plenty of icy cold alcoholic beverages (limited drinks will be provided by the club).

The 2012 MUPolo AGM is a great way to meet all the playing & non-playing members of the club, as well as your way to help shape your club for the next year by electing & voting in the new committee for 2012. And as with every year, the AGM will run at the start of the evening so as we can get on with the more enjoyable events of the evening like celebrating the opening round of the 2012 Victorian Water Polo Winter Competition which will start on the following night.

We have organised having the AGM & Team Drinks in a central location which is easily accessible by public transport (directly opposite Richmond train station), so there’s no excuse not to come down to Holliava (36 Swan St, Richmond VIC 3121) on Monday the 16th of April, 2012 at 7:30pm for what promises to be another classic MUPolo AGM & night out. You’ll get to know all your teammates who you’ll be playing with this Winter Competition out of the water as well as many of the other Club members. Look forward to seeing you all there!

MUPolo Membership Rates for 2012

As with each year there has been a small increase in membership rates to cover additional competitions being entered, training sessions and social events throughout 2012. The full membership in 2012 will cover all training sessions for the year, fully comprehensive player insurance (for both games & training), invites to all social events held throughout 2012, and will make you eligible for selection in all MUPolo water polo teams. The rates for 2012 are as follows:

• Melbourne University Student Membership = $65.00
• Non-Melbourne University Student Membership = $90.00
• Non-Student Membership = $100.00

Training

MUPolo will be recommencing our Monday evening training at the South Yarra Sports Centre (679 chapel St, South Yarra) on Monday the 27th of February.

Men’s and Women’s training times will remain the same as previous years:

• Women train from 7:30pm through to 8:45pm
• Men train from 8:30pm through to 10:00pm

Competitions

MUPolo have entered two teams (one Men’s and one Women’s) in the 13^th Brighton Baths Fast Fives Water Polo Tournament. The Brighton Baths Fast Fives Water Polo Tournament will be played on Saturday the 11^th of February 2012 and for more information please click here. Spots in the teams are limited however if you wish to play please email me back and I will try my best to include you in the relevant team.

Depending on membership numbers, MUPolo will be entering three Men’s teams and two Women’s teams in the Victorian Water Polo State Championship & Winter Competitions held during 2012. In addition to this MUPolo will be sending a representative Men’s & Women’s team to represent the University of Melbourne at the Southern University Games in Julyand the Australian University Games in September.

Merchandise

The MUPolo website will soon have a merchandise store which will allow all club members and members of the public to purchase club merchandise such as bathers, jackets, singlets, t-shirts and other items. Stay tuned for when the store opens.

O-Week Clubs & Societies Day

The MUPolo Annual Love Boat Booze Cruise is only 1 week away!

The first social function for 2011 is the MUPolo Annual General Meeting.

The 2011 MUPolo AGM will be held on Monday the 28th of March instead of our usual Monday evening training session and will be at the The Swan Hotel (Corner of Church St & Swan St, Richmond – a short walk down Chapel/Church St from the South Yarra Sports Centre where the club trains, or from Richmond train station).

The AGM is a great way for new members to meet existing mebers outside of the pool, and is always a great night. The formalities of the Annual General Meeting go for less then 30 minutes, with the rest of the evening set aside for socialising over plenty of beers.

So make sure you keep Monday the 28th of February free from what will be yet another great MUPolo social function!

Melbourne University Water Polo Club has entered one Men’s and one Women’s team in this years Brighton Baths Fast Fives Round Robin Competition.

The competition will be played on Saturday the 11th of Febraury 2012 at the Middle Brighton Sea Baths (251 The Esplanade, Brighton).

Men’s Draw
Format - 7 minute halves
Teams: Melbourne University Men, Jug’s Big Ones, Honey Badgers, The Party Boys & Monash Men

Women’s Draw
Format - 7 minute halves
Teams: Melbourne University Women, Monash Women, Dinkheadz, & FIGJAMS

PLAYING RULES

1. Game time will depend on the number of teams playing. Games will be two 5 minute halves, running time, 2 minute half time break and a change of ends.
2. Refereeing & scoring of games will be arranged by the team managers from the previous game. Referees need to be competent and fair, scorers need to be vigilant.
3. All games will be played at the scheduled time. 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss and 0 for a forfeit. Teams must have at least 4 players to start a game.
4. Normal water polo rules apply except for these five rules and a ‘fast five’ format (each team has 1 goalie, 4 players; goalkeeper free after every goal without waiting for defenders to reposition; touch any pillar after an exclusion for instant re-entry).
5. A goal will be scored for the opposing team for every exclusion awarded against a team during a game, after the fifth. There are no individual penalties for having too many majors fouls.
6. A tie at the conclusion of rounds will be decided by the result between the two teams, then total goals scored and then a decision by the event coordinator.
7. There is a goal line where the ball can go ‘out’. There are no side line boundaries.

It is that time of year again when the water polo season finishes and everyone goes on holiday, so what better way to celebrate the end of yet another great year for MUPolo then with a game of skill, touch and patience – oh and one that actively encourages participants to enjoy alcoholic beverages whilst competing.

That’s right; the club has booked a number of rinks down at the Fitzroy Bowling & Sports Club for MUPolo’s last social function of 2010. So come on down for some leisurely bowls on Sunday the 21st of November for what is always a great day out.

We’ll be kicking off the festivities at 2pm with the club putting on a BBQ for lunch. Drinks will be available over the bar at 1940’s prices and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great afternoon out so feel free to bring along friends.

Thanks for making 2010 another highly successful year for MUPolo and we look forward to celebrating the year in traditional MUPolo style on the 21st of November.

Love is in the air…Well, not only in the air but also in the river! The 2010 MUPolo Love Boat Booze Cruise will give passengers an alcohol fuelled night of debauchery aboard a beautiful ship travelling along the tropical and mysterious banks of the Yarra River.

What better way to pass your evening than aboard the “MUPolo Love Boat”? The Melbourne University Water Polo Club will try its best to please you and help you fall in love with the Yarra and all things alcoholic. $50 will get you a three hour long cruise along the banks of the Yarra with unlimited food, beer, wine and basic spirits, so keep Thursday the 26th of August free for what promises to be yet another sensation MUPolo social event.
